Leopard Watching

Leopard Watching  in Sri Lanka can be done at various national parks especially at the Yala National Park and Wilpattu National Park.
This graceful animal is a great hunter where the female leopard is versatile and opportunistic. The best time to visit the Park is early morning (sunrise) between February and April and you may be lucky to see some in October or November if the season is right.
The leopard, Panthera pardus, is a member of the Felidae family and the smallest of the four “big cats” in the genus Panthera, the other three being the tiger, lion and jaguar. Once habitated across eastern and southern Asia and Africa, from Siberia to South Africa, the leopard’s range of habitation has decreased radically because of hunting and loss of habitat.Sri Lanka is the best place in Asia to see and photograph Leopards. The average density in Yala National Park is as high as one per square kilometer. The lack of other large carnivores means that the leopard is the top predator and adults and cubs are remarkably relaxed during the day, offering great opportunities for viewing and photography.
